KEKOA AWARDS 2026

Supporting the next generation through sport. We are honoured to be the official sponsor of Kekoa Coaching's 2026 FootballPresentation Night, celebrating talent, effort and achievement across the Kekoa family.

The Brendan Wiredu Foundation exists to educate, empower and engage young people through sport. In today’s rapidly changing world, sports offer far more than physical fitness: they build character, teach life skills and create opportunities for social mobility. This blog explores how sport functions as a transformative tool for youth development and how the Foundation puts that potential into practice.

Sport as a vehicle for education Participation in sport provides a practical classroom for learning. Team sports teach cooperation, communication and leadership; individual sports foster self-discipline, goal-setting and resilience. Through structured training, young people learn to set measurable objectives, track progress and adapt strategies—skills that translate directly into academic and professional settings.

The Foundation’s educational programmes combine sport with mentoring and academic support. Coaches act as tutors in time management and study habits, while targeted workshops cover topics such as financial literacy, career planning and digital skills. By integrating sport with formal learning goals, The Brendan Wiredu Foundation helps young people view education as a broad, lifelong endeavour rather than a narrow pursuit limited to the classroom.

Empowerment through opportunity Empowerment means giving young people the tools and the confidence to shape their own futures. Sport is uniquely positioned to do this because it offers visible markers of progress: improved performance, selection for teams, leadership roles and public recognition. These markers build self-efficacy—a belief in one’s ability to succeed.

The Foundation empowers participants by creating pathways to further opportunities. Scholarships, internships and connections with community partners open doors that might otherwise remain closed. We prioritise inclusivity, ensuring girls, marginalised groups and those from low-income backgrounds can access coaching, equipment and competition. By removing barriers, we enable young people to realise potential they may not have known they possessed.

Engagement that builds community Sport brings people together across social and cultural divides. Community engagement through sport fosters belonging and mutual respect. Local leagues, community tournaments and volunteer coaching create networks that reinforce positive social norms and provide safe spaces for young people to develop.

The Brendan Wiredu Foundation works with schools, local authorities and grassroots clubs to embed programmes into community life. Our events celebrate participation as much as victory, emphasising fair play, sportsmanship and respect. Volunteers—from parents to local businesses—play a vital role, strengthening the fabric of the community while providing role models for young participants.

Measuring impact and ensuring sustainability Impact matters. The Foundation tracks outcomes such as school attendance, academic attainment, behavioural improvements and progression to further education or employment. Regular evaluation enables us to refine programmes, scale successful approaches and allocate resources effectively.

Sustainability is addressed through multi-year partnerships, local capacity building and training volunteers to sustain programmes beyond initial funding cycles. We invest in coach development to ensure quality and consistency, and in facilities that provide safe, lasting spaces for sport.

A call to action Sport can change lives, but it requires investment, collaboration and sustained commitment. The Brendan Wiredu Foundation invites individuals and organisations to get involved—through volunteering, sponsorship or simply by encouraging young people to take part. Together, we can harness sport’s power to educate, empower and engage the next generation, ensuring they have the skills, confidence and support to thrive.

Join us in making sport a stepping stone to brighter futures for young people across our communities.
