The Brendan Wiredu Foundation: Empowering Youth Through Sport and Opportunity

Sport has a unique power to transform lives. At The Brendan Wiredu Foundation, we harness that power to educate, empower and engage young people—offering more than coaching or competition, but a pathway to confidence, life skills and community involvement. Our approach combines structured sporting programmes with mentorship, academic support and opportunities for civic engagement to help young people thrive both on and off the field.

Why sport matters Participation in sport teaches resilience, teamwork, discipline and communication—skills that transfer directly into educational achievement and future employment. For many young people, sport also provides a safe space away from negative influences, a routine that fosters responsibility, and a chance to build positive peer networks. We see these outcomes repeatedly: increased school attendance, improved behaviour, and greater aspiration among participants.

Our programmes The foundation runs a variety of initiatives tailored to different age groups and needs:

  • Grassroots sports sessions: Regular, inclusive training that focuses on skill development, fitness and enjoyment. Sessions are designed to be accessible to all ability levels, encouraging participation rather than competition.

  • School partnerships: Collaborative programmes with local schools that embed sporting activities into the curriculum, paired with workshops on nutrition, health and personal development.

  • Mentoring and tutoring: Volunteer mentors provide one-to-one support, while academic tutoring helps young people keep up with studies and set realistic goals for further education or employment.

  • Leadership and coaching pathways: Older participants can take on leadership roles, receive coach education and gain qualifications that open doors to volunteering or paid coaching work.

Impact through measurement and community feedback We measure success not just by participation numbers but by tangible outcomes: improvements in school performance, reductions in anti-social behaviour, and higher levels of community engagement. Regular feedback from young people, parents and school staff informs how we adapt and improve our programmes. This continuous cycle ensures our activities remain relevant and effective.

Inclusivity at the heart Inclusivity is central to our mission. We actively work to remove barriers—financial, cultural and logistical—that prevent young people from taking part. Subsidised places, provision of equipment, and outreach in under-served areas are standard practice. We also strive to create an environment that celebrates diversity and supports young people from all backgrounds.

Volunteers and partners The foundation’s work is made possible by a committed team of staff, volunteers and partners. Volunteers bring invaluable time, experience and local knowledge; partners contribute funding, facilities and expertise. Together, we create a broad network that supports young people holistically.

Get involved There are many ways to support the foundation: volunteer as a coach or mentor, donate equipment, offer venue space, or provide financial support. Employers can partner with us for corporate volunteering days or skills-based support, which benefits both the community and staff development.

Looking ahead As we grow, our aim is to extend provision to more communities while maintaining the quality and intentionality of our work. By combining sport with education and personal development, The Brendan Wiredu Foundation seeks to produce lasting change—helping young people to believe in themselves, achieve their potential and contribute positively to society.

Join us in creating opportunities that last a lifetime.
